First edition of this learned biography of Gaius Cilnius Maecenas (65-8 B.C.), the celebrated patron of learning and letters in the time of emperor Augustus, whose friend and adviser he was. He was the protector and benefactor of Horace, Virgil and Propertius. His name lives on in the institution of Maecenas-ship. Joh. Henr. Meibom (Helmstedt 1590-Lübeck 1655), physician at Lübeck, was the author of many esteemed scholarly books.
