About this Item
First Edition (NAP). When I first purchased this book a good number of years ago there was no other copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. That remains the case today. Once listed, it will be the Only copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. This is a novel with, I assume, a social purpose. It runs 227 pages. Scrolling through, I see that there is a lot of dialogue. You can see the covers in the photos. They are in quite decent condition. The book was published in 1911. The gilt lettering on the front cover is still reasonably bright. On the spine the gilt is very much dulled. As you can see there is some rubbing and a little bending at the spine ends, a little rubbing also off the front top edge just adjacent to the top edge of the spine. The rear cover has some clear handling soiling, darkening. The cover edges look very good. The bottom two have a slight bit of smooth rubbing. The four corners each have a small spot of rubbing with a tiny bit of rub-through at the front top one. The book is square and the spine is straight, something you're not likely to find with a human at this age. The binding is solid. I'm not finding any cracks or spaces between any of the pages or between the covers and any of the pages. The covers are nicely, tightly bound. The interior of the book is in solid shape. The pages are quite clean. I found only a few instances of a very small spot. Page 23-24 has a crease off its top corner, and so do pages 105 to 148, this one very thin and right below the top corner, probably the result of a bump. None of these creases comes anywhere near the print. That's it for corner creases, there are no placeholder creases. I also noticed, turning over all the pages, that there were some of those very thin little fissure-like creases off some of the pages top edges. There are no tears on any of the pages. There are no losses. Nor are there any markings or attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Chapter 1 has the subtitle as its title. Here are a few of the other chapter headings: The Systems Agents, In the Magistrate's Court, The Kidnapping of the O'Neil Children, Mrs. O'Neil's Visit at One of the System's Homes, Lankey's Arraignment of the System, Jack Stevenson upon the Juvenile Question, A Light-Hearted Dinner Party, The Defeat of Jack Stevenson, May Thorton's Appeal to Her Old Lover.
