Extremely rare, first edition. Of antiquarian interest. Protected by soft buff card. Of French Protestant descent and educated at Christ Church, Oxford, William Romaine was ordained as a priest in December 1738. In 1741 he was appointed chaplain to the Lord Mayor of London.In about 1748 after an evangelical conversion and, despite the opposition of the church hierarchy, preached evangelical doctrine to large crowds. Romaine was a notable Hebrew scholar and acquired numerous other positions publishing various treatise and works. There is an amount of foxing throughout, especially on the title page which is also a little torn and has the impression of old wax seals at the top of the page. The text is clear to read and remains firmly bound. The buff cover seems to have been added later and is in good condition except for a small tear at top of the spine.
