SCARCE FIRST EDITION in blue cloth with gilt titling, frontis. photo of Chaffee with tissue guard (in excellent condition), illus. (listed), 296pp. Very Good+ with light wear at extremities; lower right orner bumped; overall a nice bright copy. A scarce 1st edition biography of U.S. Army officer Lt. Gen. Adna Romanza Chaffee, whose career extended from the Civil War through the Indian wars and Spanish-American War until his closing service as the U.S. Army Chief of Staff in 1904-1906. An excellent narrative of his major role in the Indian Wars culminating at Big Dry Wash. He went from Fort McDowell accompanied by scouts Mickey Free, Al Sieber in what became a major engagement. He served directly under General Crook and Lieutenant Gatewood in the campaign to capture Geronimo. He distinguished himself later in the Spaish-American War and even was part of the international force to quell the Boxer Rebellion. He also gave the address at the unveiling of the Captain William O'Neill Rough Rider Monument on July 3. 1907 in Prescott, Arizona Territory. Includes story of Custer's brigade repairing the Meadows Bridge and forcing a crossing during Sheridan's Raid on Richmond in May 1864. Also relates death of J. E. B. Stuart's death at Yellow Tavern.
