B.B. Russell, Boston 1882 (University Press, John B. Wilson, Cambridge) Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. In the original gilt-blocked morocco-backed buckram boards First Edition. Illustrated with engravings and a frontis piece of Longfellow, eleven illustrations, some from photographs, facsimile of Longfellow's writing. Stamped in gilt with title and bail of hay, decorative outlines in black; title, moth and quill on spine in gilt. 355pp including multiple appendices. Slight wear to head and tail pieces, corners bumped. Binding is solid and square, text block clean and free form markings. First free leaf shows prior ownership in neat pencil. 
Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bibliography. Francis H. Underwood was a prominent abolitionist and a founder of the Atlantic Monthly. In addition to this biography of Longfellow he penned similar works on James Russell Lowell and John Greenleaf Whittier; his best known work was Quabbin: The Story of a Small Town (1893).
