About this Item
48 pp. Original wrappers. Small tear at top of spine. Diagonal crease in upper corner, affecting wrappers and text leaves. Very Good. First Edition. Samuel Gregory was the founder of the New England Female Medical College, which opened in 1848. It was the first medical college for women in the United States. Gregory "urged the revival of midwifery in America and deplored the practice of obstetrics by male physicians. His school, established in 1848, was confined at first to teaching hygiene, physiology, midwifery, and the diseases of women. A full medical course was not attempted until 1852, and the first medical degrees were not given to women for another two years" (Bonner, Becoming a Physician, p. 212). Second and third editions were published in 1854 and 1856. Seller Inventory # 15660
