About this Item
vi, [3], 80pp. With an engraved portrait frontispiece. Contemporary gilt-tooled tree calf, contrasting morocco lettering-piece. Slightly rubbed to extremities, small chip to head of spine. With the bookplate of the author's son, Sir Richard Paul Jodrell Bart, and also the later bookplate of Ron Fiske of Morningthorpe Manor. Very occasional spotting. The first edition of an Italian translation of English playwright and politician Richard Paul Jodrell's (1745-1831) Persian tragedy, based on Herodotus, and first published (in English) in 1786 in a five act version. This nineteenth-century Italian translation, in three acts - executed by Giuseppe Caravita - appears to have been provoked by the 1819 staging, under the patronage of the Persian ambassador to London, and republication of the shortened play (London 1819). The 1822 third English edition later included this Italian translation which was first produced, as this imprint explains, 'A spese dell'autore'. Sir Richard Paul Jodrell, 2nd Bart. (1781- 1861), poet and son of the author. Uncommon; COPAC and OCLC locate seven copies in the UK (at Aberdeen, BL, Cambridge, NLS, Oxford, St. Andrews and Trinity College Dublin) but none elsewhere. Size: Quarto. Seller Inventory # AQ15172
