About this Item
"Lawrie Todd - or, The Settlers in the Woods" by John Galt. Complete in 3 volumes. 1830 1st Edition; Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley; London. LAWRIE TODD Lawrie Todd is the story of a shrewd, honest and hard-working young man from the village of Bonnytown in Midlothian who emigrates to the United States of America and is partly based on the memoirs of Grant Thorburn, a seed merchant in New York. Galt considered it a "theoretical history" of a society in a phase of radical and rapid change. Lawrie Todd is involved in the clearing and settling of virgin forest on the frontier and the subsequent founding of Judiville, a town which grows in a few years from nothing to a population of 7,000 with six churches and a theater. Condition: Some light rubbing, scratches to the leather covers; worn/rounded corners. All volumes are tightly bound. The first 3 pages of volume II are present but detached.
