About this Item
This volume includes the first known contribution by Joseph Conrad to a published anthology. Conrad?s story: ?An Outpost of Progress?, which has an African theme, represents the longest among the 15 other contributors who included F. Anstey, W.E. Norris, Edgar Fawcett and Eden Phillpotts. All contributed their offerings free of charge to raise funds for the besieged citizens of Ladysmith, South Africa, who had suffered grievously in 1900 during the Boer War. David Weber, a Conrad specialist describes this book as: ?In my collection of Joseph Conrad First Editions, this is exceedingly rare?. Our copy is well bound with the original gilt top edge and spine. The green cloth covers are complete, but show some soiling and wear, particularly to the rear board which has been partially discoloured (see photographs). The FEP contains a label indicating this was a school prize for attendance, dated 1904. There is extensive foxing affecting the prelims and the endpapers. Internally, some foxing to the page gutters which rarely affects the text. Offered in its found state, this rarity would repay professional restoration. More photographs available on request. Please note that if ordering from abroad, any customs charge will be the responsibility of the buyer. All proceeds of sale go to LOROS, a Hospice Charity serving Leicestershire and Rutland.
