About this Item
This is one of the earliest printed dust jackets known. The book is undated [but 1883]. Very good, with pale foxing throughout; and some rubbing to points and the lower edges). The rare, original dust-jacket has a long, closed tear to the back panel and some loss to the spine (about two-fifths) and lower edge. The wrapper (tissue-thin buff paper printed to the front as per the book's upper board) is remarkably clean and may owe this and, in fact, its very survival, to the presence of a second, thicker, plain buff jacket (chipped). This secondary jacket appears to be of a similar vintage, and was presumably provided by either the publisher, the bookseller or an early owner. The only other example of the jacket we could locate was that on a dedication copy that sold for $8,125 over ten years ago at Christie's, New York. Seller Inventory # 0020
