Add to basketvi, [7]-360pp, plus 36 page publisher catalogue. First free endpaper missing, extremities worn, frayed at corners, the first sixty pages or so seem to have been opened roughly and then trimmed lightly to get rid of small tears and uneven page edges, else G. Sabin 47378. Coleman 2227. Wright 2:1694. History and fiction intermixed, touching on all aspects of the westward expansion, with sketches of the Mississippi Valley, (including Kentucky) pioneer life and customs, life in the backwoods, etc. The year after this book was published, Meeker founded the Union Colony in Colorado, an agricultural community, though not a commune, since he advocated private ownership of land. In 1878, he accepted the appointment of Indian agent at the White River reservation, where he and the rest of the white men with him were killed by the Ute Indians.
