Including 1 hand-colored plate on early South American art. This is the atlas volume only from the first edition of the study by the naturalist and French explorer Alcide D'Orbigny visited the Americas: Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia and returned to France with an enormous collection of more than 10,000 natural history specimens. The 15 plates represent the most interesting skulls, mummies, objects and various artifacts he found during his scientific expedition. Three quarter leather and cloth, gilt spine with raised bands, marbled edges and endpapers. With the decorative bookplate of archaeologist and collector A.D. Passmore. Rubbing to boards. Light foxing. Overall very good condition.
