About this Item
608 numbered pages, plus 8 pages of ads. Stated First American Edition. Black sateen cloth binding with spine stamped in gilt and 'Joseph the Provider' blind stamped on front board. Top edge stained yellow, as issued. Fore-edges of the leaves are rough-cut, corners sharp. Bright, clean, tight, and square text block, no marks of any kind. Unclipped ($3.00) DJ in clear archival protector. DJ shows wear to top and bottom edges and some scuffing on front, which is reflected in the price. From the DJ: 'Joseph the Provider, the fourth and last volume of Thomas Mann's great tetralogy, tells the story of the hero's rise to renown as a statesman in Egypt and his successful conduct of the famous fourteen years' abundance and famine in the lands. It is also the story of Joseph's restoration to his father Jacob, of the migration of Israel down to Egypt, and Jacob's death and burial; and lastly, it is a marrying of Herbrew, Greek, Babylonian, and Egyptian religious traditions as they met and mingled at the court and in the mind of Ikhnaton, the famous heretic Pharaoh of the fourteenth-century B.C.' Translated from the German for the first time by H. T. Lowe-Porter. Seller Inventory # 002995
