About this Item
Square quarto. 72 unpaginated pages. Orange and b/w photo-illustrated wrappers with photomontage and white lettering on the covers. Produced shortly before the outbreak of WWII, this beautifully produced trilingual tourist publication is profusely illustrated throughout with fine b/w photogravure images, containing text in English, French and German. The images here feature the gamut of Japanese cultural, artistic, geographic, and industrial subjects, in an attempt to promote the Japanese empire, its people, culture and its successes. There are many striking images throughout and the quality of the photography and reproduction is quite good. Numerous examples of photomontage and photo-collage are included as well. In addition to Japan proper, the publication features sections on territories which during that period were controlled by the Empire of Japan including Korea, Manchuria and Taiwan. A map on the interior front cover shows a map of Japan, and includes the previously mentioned areas. The publication features the work of a number of the most acclaimed Japanese photographers of the first half of the 20th century, including Ihei Kimura (æ æ ä¼ å…µè¡ , 1901-1974), Kiyoshi Koishi (å° ç æ …, 1908 -1957), Yoshio Watanabe (æ ¡è¾º ç¾ é , 1907â "2000), Hiroshi Mitsuzumi (1909-1977), Masao Horino (å é æ£é ,1907â "1998), and JiichirÅ Yasukochi (å® æ å …æ »ä é , 1883â "1968). Although the book is undated, its publication can be assumed to be the late 1930s, as the final page and a bilingual French-English insert laid in at the front cover promote the Grand International Exposition of Japan, planned to be held, March-August of 1940. The exposition ultimately was canceled due to the outbreak of WWII. The olympic symbol is printed on the back cover. Text and captions throughout in English, French and German, printed in a two column format. Light age toning and rubbing to the covers. Closed tear at the bottom of the title page. Wrappers have com loose from the binding at the front hinge along the gutter of the interior front cover. Book block still tight overall. Binding in very good, interior in very good- condition overall. Protected by modern mylar. Seller Inventory # 47879
