First American edition (first printing) of this classic collection of Zen koans, first compiled by Genro in 18th-century Japan; with his commentary, added commentary by his disciple Fugai, and further notes for this edition by one of the translators, himself a monk in California from 1905-1958. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book; price-clipped (though $3.95 price remains) jacket shows a little edgwear, minor smudging & fading. Text clean; 175 pages; brief bibliography, glossary, cross-references of Chinese/Japanese names, biographical notes on Senzaki, illustrations from ink drawings. Size: 7¼" by 7¾".
