About this Item
Second edition of one of the first books written by an African American woman to be published in the United States. The first edition was published one year earlier in 1892. Bound in publisher's original maroon cloth stamped in gilt, patterned endpapers. Very Good. Rebacked with repairs made to the spine ends; light wear and light soiling to cloth. Pages tanned and with a few small sporadic stains. A rare copy of a major work of 19th century African American literature. Harper's novel would influence later Black female authors such as Ida B. Wells (who used "Iola" as an early pen name) and Zora Neale Hurston. Seller Inventory # 140945387
