Quarto. (cviii) 779 (1) pp. Rebound in blue buckram boards with the original black buckram spine pasted on. Spine with gilt lettering and gilt stamped publisher's device at tail. Introduction by George Webbe Dasent on the life of Richard Cleasby. The foreword provides a brief overview of the history of the Viking Age & medieval Scandinavian history. The dictionary was first conceived by philologist Richard Cleasby in 1840, as the first comprehensive effort at translating the Old Icelandic language into English. By the time of his death in 1847, work on the dictionary was incomplete. When Vigfusson arrived in Oxford in 1866, he acquired Cleasby's collected documents on the subject and spent the proceeding seven years working to build on the previous efforts and complete the dictionary. Upon its publication in 1874, the landmark work became the first of its kind. Binding with light age wear including minor smudging, bumping and rubbing to edges, front and back cover. Light stain to bottom edge. Interior with slight crumpling to brown front free endpaper with slight peeling along spine. Sporadic minor stains on a few pages. Ex-libris of the original owner, Samuel Parsons Scott on interior front cover and free front endpaper and his signature inked to verso of front free endpaper. Ex-library. Library stamp of Jefferson Medical College Library along bottom edge, with perforated stamps on the bottom of the title page and bottom of page 779. Small closed tear at bottom of the page along spine on pg. 775-777. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. Vigfusson was one of the most notable Scandinavian scholars of the 19th century. Seller Inventory # 40448
