The 1876 first edition, one of 100 'deluxe' copies in red cloth gilt, as requested by Lewis Carroll for presentation purposes, here uninscribed. 9 full-page black & white illustrations. Front end-papers split at inner hinges, rear starting. Minor edge-wear, moderate to head & tail of spine with chips of loss & 1.5cm split to top rear outer hinge. Gilt decoration to boards & spine reasonably bright, binding otherwise sound, if very slightly skewed. Some browning / handling marks to first & last few leaves & occasionally within; generally clean. Burn & Co binders label to rear pastedown. 18.8cm tall, collected complete.
