From the front matter: "It is a pleasure to present to our friends, on the occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the Horace Mann School, this publication, in which is set forth the history and the educational philosophy of the Horace Mann School for Boys." By 1937, the school's notable alumni already included Valentine Davies (author of "Miracle on 34th Street"), Morris Ernst (co-founder of the ACLU), Leland Hayward (agent and producer), Rockwell Kent (illustrator), Arthur Hays Sulzberger (New York Times publisher), Paul Francis Webster (songwriter), and William Carlos Williams (poet).
