First edition. Folio: (6), 173, (1 blank), (2), 41, (2), 104, (2), 105-275, (65 indices etc)pp., frontipiece portrait of Thomas Stanley, and 9 full-page engravings of philosophers. Very good copy in 17th century full calf, spine gilt, ends of spine a little worn. Early ownership inscriptions of Thos. Benet and Eliz. Benet on front free end-paper. Title page is inscribed "Rhodd. I. Morgan i Yscol Llanbedr". The History of Philosophy was the magnus opus of the metaphysical poet Thomas Stanley, the first two volumes being published in 1655/56. This third volume of 1660 contains five parts - Italian, Heraclitian, Eleatick, Sceptick & Epicurean Sects. Each has a separate title page dated 1659 although the general title is dated 1660. The nine striking portraits are of Pythagoras, Empedocles, Archytas, Heraclitus, Xenophanes, Democritus, Pyrrho, Timon & Epicurus. This third volume appears to be scarcer that the first two volumes.
