Gray patterned cloth with gilt insignia on front cover. Large octavo. 540pp. Illustrated. A history of this regiment formed in September, 1816 as a defense force for the city of New Haven. Originally called the New Haven Light Infantry its first commander was Staphos Staples. In April, 1861, the Grays enlisted as a unit for three months services as part of the 2nd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry under the command of Col. Alfred Howe Terry. The Grays fought at the first Battle of Bull Run and at the end of their 90 day enlistment returned to New Haven. Many of its members joined other units, particularly companies of the 7th, 15th and 27th regiments. A number of Grays in the 27th saw action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The book contains biographies of its officers and is illustrated with 19 engraved portraits of officers and one of its roll of honor. A worn copy with some spotting and soiling to the covers and some fraying to the lower spine. The text is good with some scattered foxing and soiling. Eight pages near the front of the book have some wrinkling. Several pages near the end have some staining in the lower right corner which also affects the last portrait. One section of text in the middle is lightly sprung from the binding. Scarce. Seller Inventory # 9403
