Rebacked with the original spine laid down, hinges repaired, signs of removed tape along front joint, covers considerably rubbed, newer flyleaves, newspaper portrait and article about the author tipped in. Contents moderately foxed, two small ink notes on p. 46 and 281. A nice association copy. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR "To Hon. Thos. S. Haymond / With the best respects of / His very true friend / Wills De Hass / Sept. 14, 1851." Thomas Sherwood Haymond (1794-1869) was a Congressman representing Virginia, and a lawyer. Born near Fairmont, Virginia (now West Virginia), Haymond attended private schools as a child and went on to attend the College of William and Mary. He served as a private in the War of 1812, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1815, commencing practice in Morgantown, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was president of the county court of Marion County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1842 before being elected a Whig to the United States House of Representatives to fill a vacancy in 1849, serving until 1851. Afterwards, Haymond was a brigadier general in the Virginia Militia and at the outbreak of the Civil War entered the Confederate Army as a colonel in 1861, serving throughout the war. He died in Richmond, Virginia on April 5, 1869 and was interned in Palatine Cemetery near Fairmont, West Virginia.--Wikipedia. Haynes 4825, Howes D226 (c). Rare. Seller Inventory # 012553
