Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Title page printed in red and black. With numerous in-text illustrations from the illuminations in contemporary manuscripts and other sources, drawn and engraved by F.W. Fairholt. Oxford DNB, Michael Welman Thompson, "Wright, Thomas (1810-1877)". Thomas Wright was a respected folklorist and historian of Medieval Europe. According to Thompson's article in the DNB, this volume "was Wright's most significant work of medieval history". With 319 illustrations, Wright's book "was a pioneering work and is still worth consulting . [the book draws] heavily on the vernacular literature with which Wright was familiar and gives a vivid insight into medieval life" Some wear to the extemities including a touch of soiling to the front board, a bit of occasional foxing to the leaves.
