About this Item
1792. First edition. 206pp. and a folding illustration showing a representation of the armies of King Charles I and Sir Thomas Fairfax preparatory to the Battle of Naseby. John Mastin (1747-1829) was an English topographer and was the Vicar at Naseby. His history of Naseby is his best known work and one of the earliest published histories of the parish of Naseby. As might be expected, the book records the Civil War battle that took place in the parish in 1645. Other material includes an account of agricultural practices, references to contemporary residents and details of at least some of the memorials and tombstones that were then present in Naseby church and churchyard. The book is bound in later (probably early 20th century) full leather boards with gold titling on a leather label and five raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some scuffing and a few faint stains on the boards. The spine is noticeably faded together with about 1" of the adjacent part of the front board and 1/2" of the rear board. There is slight fading around the other edges of the boards. Small pieces of the title label are missing and there is a small dent on the top edge of the front board. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and a little scattered light foxing. The top 1/2" of the title page has a professional paper repair, probably carried out at the time of the recasing, and the folding illustration has similar repairs to the folds. There is an armorial bookplate on the front fixed endpaper but no inscription. Seller Inventory # VIEngland11
