The title of Duke of Brissac was originally created in 1611 for Charles II de Cossé, Count of Brissac, and has been held by the de Cossé family, even through its temporary interruption during the French Revolution with the death of Louis Hercule Timoléon de Cossé, 8th Duke of Brissac (1734 1792), a Grand Panetier of France and commander in chief of the King's Constitutional Guard who was killed during the September Massacres.
