Very good condition dark green cloth boards with blind-stamped front and rear cover decorations and gilt spine lettering. Includes Preface; Statistical Tables; and Index to Hand-book of 1884; and McPherson's PoliticalPublications from 1860 to 1884. The lower front cover contains a 1 1/2 inch lightening to the cloth. The volume is otherwise in near fine to fine condition. The spine is exceedingly tight and square and all pages are in fine condition. "The important legislation effected during the last two years include the Civil Service Act, the Tariff of 1883, the American Merchant-Marine Act, and the Supplemental Act touching Chinese Immigration. Of these, the first two were enacted by the Forty-Seventh Congress, and the last two by the Forty-Eighth. The entire record of proceedings on each is contained in this volume; also, the action upon the unsettled and pending questions of the Electoral Count, the Presidential Succession, the National Bank Circulation, the Trade Dollar, Interstate Commerce, National Aid to Common Schools, Supplemental Aint-Polygamy Legislation, Unearned Land Grants, the Enlargement of the Navy, and the principles on which our Pension System to Soldiers and Sailors is to be reconstructed. These subjects occupied, more or less, the attention of Congress at its two late sessions; and the attitude of men and parties on each is set forth in these pages. Of the Decisions of the Supreme Court printed in full, three are of commanding interest - those relating to the Civil Rights Act, the "Legal Tender" question, and the "Anti-Ku-Klux" laws. The minor Decisions, of which there are many, and which are printed in abstract, would of themselves be sufficient to mark the period as an important one in the progress of Constitutional Law. I cannot avoid calling attention to the Chapters devoted to the detail of Constitutional movements in the various States, and of Constitutional propositions in the two houses of Congress. Both show, with clearness, the tendency of political thought and the direction which political activity will take. The questions of the future are enwrapped in these suggestions; and they deserve more than hasty perusal. The political facts covered by the publication - both textual and statistical - are carefully classified, and presented in compact form, with a view to the value which is found in readiness for use. In the votes given, the names of Republicans are printed in Roman, of Democrats in Italics, and of Greenbackers and Independents in small caps.
