About this Item
[moderate shelfwear to bottom edge, slight bumping to top corners, front hinge a little weak, slight fading to cloth at top of spine; jacket browned with age, various tiny chips but no loss of text or illustrations, old internal tape-repairs at several corners]. According to the jacket blurb, the Apostle Paul had "never been the central character in a play" until Mr. Stechan "devoted a score of years" to the composition of this one. (He proves it by citing his sources, and providing a bibliography.) The play was "written from a non-sectarian angle," to portray Paul not only as "the man who saved Christianity from degenerating into a minor Judaic sect" but also as "the first practical Internationalist -- forerunner of our presentday League of Nations." The author was one of the founders of the Pasadena Community Playhouse, where he served as general manager for five years. The Playhouse's then-Director, Gilmor Brown, is among the personages providing laudatory quotes for the jacket, claiming that as he read the play he "visualized it in production, pictorially magnificent, dramatically moving." He did, however, actually stage it there, nor, it seems, did anybody else. Uncommon in the dust jacket, perhaps because the lower part of the rear panel contains an order blank for ordering more copies of the book, an action the original owner of this copy was evidently not moved to perform.
