[good solid book, minor soiling to covers along top and bottom edges, some spotting to page edges, slight deterioration of cloth at spine ends; jacket worn at edges, corners and spine, ragged tear leading to small missing chunk at bottom of front panel, several smaller chips at edges of rear panel]. Vintage golf-themed novel, which according to the jacket blurb combines "the charm of the old Mississippi with the romance of modern youth, weaving throughout the lure of the golf course." The prolific Nashville-born author (1852-1939) was a newspaper editor and homespun humorist who turned out several dozen novels, of which this was one of his last. His fiction featured a gallery of stock Southern characters, including dialect-spouting darkies. I'm not quite sure what the plot of this book is about, but the protagonist starts out as a caddie, and characters throughout seem to be engaged in golf matches on a regular basis. On page 73, the protagonist opines that "in golf, my dear boy, one never retires and therefore his intellectual and physical arteries do not harden." Apparently Read knew wherefrom he spoke: according to a contemporary news item, at the age of 76 he was "healthy and vigorous," and played 18 to 36 holes of golf daily! The dust jacket, alas, is non-pictorial, although there is a cameo-like drawing of a golfer on the title page. Seller Inventory # 13849

On the occasions I let this slide, it's generally because the book is a common one, or because the title itself is sufficiently descriptive. * Care for the Book. I package all books with great care, to ensure they will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach their new owners in the same condition as advertised. My specific packaging techniques vary according to the needs of the book itself, but either a sturdy box or an unbendable package is always involved. (No bubble envelopes, ever, unless the contents are thoroughly protected within.)
