The thing must be done well. The attractions of wit and charm require no exegesis, at least not yet, but these are the only the most immediate gains. Living with their drawings, with their confident assertion of shared humours, breeds as much respect as affection; or such is my experience of them, and Mr. Boyd Harte's success with the sterner discipline of the portraits (luminous without being prettified, benevolent without being anodyne, honest without being artist's therapy) is a serious accomplishment which puts a higher value on his joie d'esprit.".
