2 vols, 12mo (7.63 x 4.88 inches), original blind-stamped purple cloth, [1-2], [vii]-xii, [13]-253, [254-280]; 293, [1] pages. Frontis and engraved title page in vol. 1. "I sent in my card, after writing on it with a pencil, An American would be greatly obliged if he could see Mr. Dickens. In a moment or two the servant returned and showed me to the library. The author was sitting in a large arm-chair by his table, with a sheet of Master Humphrey s Clock before him." Travel letters from England, observations on abolition, and a meeting with Charles Dickens--an epistolary travel account from the American diplomat, collected during his travels after he had served as a delegate to the 1840 World Anti-Slavery Convention in London. Ink ownership signature for Rev. William Williams dated Jan. 1, 1842 to the head of each title page. See Sabin 40223. Some light foxing throughout and occasional light stains; spine and board edges faded, with some light wear and bumping; a good to very good copy. A later printing of the 1841 first edition.
