Selecta Volume E with foreword by R. R. Gomory; Selecta Volume N and Selecta Volume H with prefaces by Mandelbrot; Selecta Volume C with foreword by P. W. Jones, all volumes with contributions by numerous other authors. Mandelbrot achieved great fame with his discovery of fractal geometry, a mathematical theory that can be used to represent the "roughness" of things such as the shape of mountains or coastlines. He coined the term in 1975 in his book Les objet fractals: forme, hasard et dimension. The present volumes comprise Mandelbrot's collected works in English (the so-called 'Selecta'), although unpublished material remains in the Mandelbrot manuscript collection at Stanford University. A very handsome set of Mandelbrot's works, quite uncommon in the first edition and in such fine condition.
