This extensive collection of writings from Gordon Mackie leads us into a world of fly-fishing adventure, mystery and debate. We explore a wide range of waters, with trout and grayling the principle quarry, while the author is forever seeking to identify the less tangible secrets of successful fly-fishing and discover some of the joys of the natural world that trout sport embraces. The work is largely anecdotal in nature, laced with humour, pithy comments and delightfully surreal happenings. Even the fisherman's family may find it an absorbing read, tracing as it does some of the motives and circuitous thought processes that lie behind this strangely gripping obsession. Written in a chatty, easy style, this diverse assemblage of little masterpieces is far removed from what might be described as the 'standard' fishing book, yet represents a most valuable addition to an already sparkling array of angling literature.
About the Author: Gordon Mackie caught his first trout on a fly fifty years ago from the river Erme in Devonshire. Having escaped from London during the war the family settled in the village of Plymstock where Gordon was immediately captivated by the wonders of nature, particularly butterflies and moths. He became a 'proper' fly-fisherman in 1963 when, having moved to Bristol, he discovered the little Box Brook near Bath. The author joined the Wilton Fly Fishing Club in 1968, acting as president for ten years up to 1983, and now serves on the committee of the Salisbury and District AC. Gordon's first article was published in 1968, since which time a regular stream of letters, reports and features have appeared under his own name and others including Warburton, Old Sarum and Geoffrey Oaklands. He is the author of How to Start Trout Fishing and contributed to The Shell Book of Angling and The Haig Guide to Trout Fishing in Britain. Describing himself as a bit of a recluse, he now lives alone in his 'shack' surrounded by the woods, downlands and rivers of southern Wiltshire.
