About this Item
"A Fable" by William Faulkner. Published by Random House, in New York, 1954. 6'' x 8.5'', 437 pages. From a signed limited edition released before the trade edition; however, this is an unnumbered and unsigned "out of series" copy. A rare edition of this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by one of America's greatest writers. The book is in very good minus condition. The cloth boards are toned but largely clean, with light shelf wear on the spine and bumping on the corners. The illustration of six crosses on the front board is well preserved and clean, as is the lettering on the spine. The bottom edge has a few small stains/discolorations. The front and rear pastedowns and endpapers are clean, with a light discoloration along the hinges. The binding, while loose, is intact. The text block is toned, but bright and complete, and largely clean with the exceptions of a few small stains scattered throughout the book. Overall, a well-preserved and rare edition of Faulkner's classic. "A Fable" is Faulkner's novel of the First World War. Set in the trenches of France, it is a story of the line soldiers of both armies refusing to fight, and bringing a halt to the conflict, under the leadership of a Christ-like figure named Corporal Stefan. Faulkner spent over a decade writing the book, and it won him the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award when it came out. This classic by the author of "The Sound and the Fury" and "As I Lay Dying" is a unique anti-war novel that is seen by some critics as a precursor to "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller.
