From Gilleasbuig Ferguson Rare Books ABA ILAB, Isle of Skye, United Kingdom Seller rating 5 out of 5 stars
AbeBooks Seller since 18 July 2017
1st Edition, single uncut folded sheet, 8vo, 16pp. No title page. First 7pp bear the header 'Fear nan Sgeul'. Undated but a letter from 'Gleann a' Ghiůthais' (Pine Glen, New Brunswick?)[p.9] is dated 20th May 1920. Very slight staining to inner edge. Otherwise clean and free of foxing. A few closed tears to folds. A curious and bare-bones piece of Gaelic ephemera, which - as far as I can make out - is totally unrecorded. I suspect from the print and style and the Gaelic itself that it was written by Jonathan G MacKinnon (Cape Breton native and editor of Mac-talla and Fear na Cčilidh.) This item appears to be part of an attempt to establish a Gaelic periodical in the early 20s, with the title 'Fear nan Sgeul' (The Story Man / Storyteller). This presumably unsuccessful effort was followed 8 years later by "Fear na Cčilidh" which the MacKinnon brothers (Jonathan and Don) published for 2 years. The stories are a mix of Canadian-Highland humour, translations of moral tales, and a Gaelic song [Oran a' Chlamhain: 'The Song of the Hawk'] composed in Cape Breton [p.16]. Seller Inventory # 1523
