First American edition, from British sheets. Good only with spine cocked with hinges cracked, owner's name neatly penned on front fly, small stain in text on pages 14-15, lacking the rare dustwrapper. The novelization of a 1903 play which had been rejected, but which Maugham revised and which was eventually published in 1912. It was also the basis for the first of over 60 films derived from Maugham's works: a 1915 five reel picture by George Meldford with screenplay by William C. de Mille and featuring Lou Tellegen.
