About this Item
Five folio volumes (15 x 13 in.), reddish brown buckram over boards, recent red leather title labels with gilt titles, title page in each volume. This massive catalogue of etchings and drypoints by James McNeill Whistler contains facsimiles of 438 of his works, reproduced in collotype, with many in two or more states (over 1,000 plates in all). All facsimiles present as called for in the separate text volume that describes each work (not included here; that volume was later reprinted and is available online). The collotypes were originally issued on card mounts, and here they are in turn mounted on mesh stubs and bound in five volumes as called for (there are five individual title pages). One of 402 sets. Very good set overall; contents generally fine; small chip to the edge of one mount, a few light spots on vol. 1 title page; closed tear to title page of vol. 4 neatly repaired; small corner stain to some vol. 4 mounts, not affecting the collotypes; some discoloration to the rear cover of vols. 4 and 5 (again, not affecting the interior), minor scattered marks elsewhere on covers, spines mildly faded. Some mounts loose; having been bound some time ago, the mesh stub holding a mount may have become fragile and a mount may cleanly detach if the volume is opened too wide. In a few instances, trimming of the mount edges for binding resulted in a collotype number printed on the mount (not the collotype) being partially shaved off, though the text volume makes any needed identification easy.
