About this Item
William Watson was a poet and epigramist who was well-regarded in his day, but whose publicly-voiced political opinions led to his being passed over for Poet Laureateship (Robert Bridges was given the post). An enemy of tyranny in whatever form it appeared, Watson was often a bit too pointed with his political criticisms - at least as far as the powers-that-be were concerned. His epigrams were often brilliant, and - in his day - much quoted. Today he is unfortunately a poet who has fallen into obscurity. His Epigrams are small gems. /// "Epigrams of Art, Life, and Nature" was first published in England in 1884. This 1896 Thomas Mosher edition was issued in Mosher's small press periodical, "The Bibelot", Vol. II, No. 11, for November of 1896. Petite periodical, 36 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's advertising; approximately 4 3/4" x 6"; printed bluish-gray wraps, sewn. Cover printed in red and black. /// Condition: The thread that binds this pamphlet together has broken, and thus the cover is detached, and the attachment of the leaves themselves, whilst holding on, should be considered fragile . the cover has various small smudges and spots, as well as chipping and a bit of weathering about the edges - there are a couple of spots on the spine fold displaying small loss. The interior has some scattered spotting and small smudging, as well as a touch of foxing - else clean and presentable. Seller Inventory # 62
