About this Item
New Haven, , octavo, 2 vols. [xi, [1], 518 p.; vii, [1], 696, 48, 12 p., 3 plates and numerous text illustrations]. ***CONTENT: Benjamin Silliman, Sr. (1779-1864), a pioneering and highly influential early American educator and scientist, was also a venerable professor of chemistry and geology at Yale College, and founder of the American Journal of Science. This massive treatise, (the largest American chemistry textbook of its time), is arguably Silliman's most important scientific work. "Elements" provided a detailed, up-to-date synopsis of the subject that compared favorably with European textbooks of that day (DSB). This treatise presents an amalgam of topics in physics (light, heat, electricity, galvanism, etc.), mineralogy (crystallization, analyses of minerals and mineral waters), materia medica, pharmacy and the chemistry of plant and animal substances, as well as covering traditional topics in chemistry (metals, nonmetals, compounds, etc.). ***CONDITION: This is a near Fine set in the original tan paper-covered boards with recent beige linen backstrips, with the original printed paper spine labels laid down on the spines. The covers are well preserved, showing only mild scuffing and spotting; spine cloth unworn, label for volume one chipped, with loss to lettering. The text pages are untrimmed and are near pristine: bright, clean, fresh and crisp. Joints and hinges fully intact, bindings very firm. Bookplates removed from front and rear pastedowns, leaving shadows. The endpapers of both volumes bear the inked ownership inscription of George C. Shattuck, and his name is also rubber-stamped on the title pages. Dr. Shattuck (1783-1854) was a prominent Boston physician, co-founder of the New England Journal of Medicine, and patron of Dartmouth College and other institutions. This is a most handsome, well preserved set of a scarce work, in very close to its original state. Not in BMNH. Not in Ward and Carozzi. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
