About this Item
1844. First edition. viii, 114pp., a 2 page advertisement for another work by the author, and a 32 page catalogue dated September 1844. This book was written at the request of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. The principal behind the request was to point out to the farmer a remedy for some of his difficluties - a remedy which consists mainly in a better economy of those fertilizers which he already possesses. The author has carried out this task, but not confined homself to it. As well as looking at waste manures of the farm he considers waste manures of towns (sewerage and the waste of manufactures such as flax, soap liquid, tanners' bark, etc.) and local waste (peat, seaweed, clay, sand, etc.). The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and staining on the boards. The spine ends and corners are bumped with a little damage to the loss to the cloth on the corner tips and some damage and loss to the cloth at both spine ends. There is partial splitting with a little loss to the cloth on the front spine edge and a tear in the cloth running across the spine over part of the titling. This tear has been repaired by a previous owner. The contents are tight and clean with a few marks from finger smudges and scattered foxing. The foxing is mostly light although some of the preliminary and first dozen or so pages are a bit more heavily affected. There is light soiling on the endpapers but no inscription.
