Illustrated after color reproductions of works from each of the 31 exhibited artists, including Terry Adkins, Chakaia Booker, Charles Gaines, David Hammons, Maren Hassinger, Arthur Jafa, Glenn Ligon, Senga Nengudi, Adam Pendleton, Howardena Pindell, Adrian Piper, William Pope.L, Gary Simmons, Nari Ward, and Fred Wilson. Accompanied by art historical essays from both Cassel and Franklin Simons, as well as writings from some of the artists themselves (e.g. Gaines, Jafa, Piper), artist bios, a sociological timeline, and a selected bibliography.
