two volumes, original cloth, spines bumped, minor marks to covers, red and black title-pages, bright, small pieces missing from pastedowns, very good. a tragic tale about a gallant old squire and his adulterous wife; the author s only work; the Bentley file copy is described as half-cloth over marbled celluloid (the first use of celluloid in binding) and this copy has evidence of an earlier cloth beneath the binding, being identical to Wolff s copy (Wolff speculates that the celluloid binding was a trial binding); first edition; 324 and 297 pages Wolff 6940.
