About this Item
privately published in the Netherlands in 2008, 328 pages, hardcover in printed boards, 7.25" by 4.75". Text in English and Dutch. Limited edition of 500. Excellent and unusual photo essay of a retired Dutchman living in remote mountainous Spain. From the publisher: "We would come to doubt everything. reads cinematically, opening with the title printed on glossy black paper and leading into a series of photographs separated by black pages that seem to function as fade outs. The book's content tells the story of Juan de la Torre, a Brabant dentist who thirty years ago left his home in the Netherlands to start a new life in the remote mountain village of San Sebastian de Garabandal in Spain. Juan leads the life of a hermit, devoting himself to the 'study of life' and immersing himself in books on religion, alternative philosophies, the falsification of history and conspiracy theories. Artist Wytske van Keulen presents Juan's story through photographs of the rugged, romantic mountain landscape around Garabandal and of Juan s daily life. By enveloping her subject, leaving openings in the image sequence and occasionally adding existing archive material to her photographs, van Keulen creates a portrait of a mysterious figure and stretches the limits of the documentary genre, appealing explicitly to the reader s imagination." Rare and highly recommended. My last copy. Seller Inventory # ABE-19060224965
