About this Item
First edition in book form, mixed state, lacking the errata slip. Octavo: xvi, 624 p. with the engraved frontispiece, title page, and 38 plates, including the "dark" plate opposite p.547, by H.K. Browne ("Phiz"). Full polished calf binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with morocco spine labels, decorative gilt stamping, five raised bands, ornamental dentelles, new endpapers, and a ribbon marker. The bookplate of California banker and philanthropist Paul Rodman Mabury appears on the front pastedown. Light foxing and toning to a few of the plates; overall, the contents are fairly fresh. Occasional mild rubbing along the extremities; otherwise very good. Smith, Part I: 8. A compelling depiction of a man imprisoned by his own pride, Dombey and Son explores the devastating effects of emotional deprivation on a dysfunctional family and on society as a whole.
