Translated from the Dutch by Jacobine Menzies-Wilson. Maroon cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Boards slightly darkened. Small inscription to front paste-down and neat stamp from The Times Book Club to lower paste-down. In unclipped dust jacket with original price of 9s. 6d. Chipped with some loss to spine ends and folds, with a small piece missing at the corner of upper panel. *** The first novel to be translated into English written by the Dutch realist novelist Antoon Coolen (1897-1961). It was originally published in 1938 as Herberg In 't Misverstand and follows the lives of some the regulars at the pub The Cross Purposes in a small provincial town in the Netherlands.
