First American edition. 2 volumes, 268 & 252 pages, + 4 of ads to vol 2. A uniform set, bound in the publisher's paper covered boards, with cloth spine strips and yellow paper title labels, the boards are quite marked, rubbed and bumped, the cloth is grubby with small tears and the labels are chipped and grubby. The untrimmed text blocks are quite dusty, marked and slightly foxed, with tears to some of the page edges, vol 2 looks to have had the first blank page fairly neatly removed, and both volumes have the same ownership inscription to the title page, which may be that of Orlando A. Pratt. One of Roche's last novels, written during a period of particular stress and hardship. It revolves around the intrigues, romance and excesses of fashionable society life, with twinges of the Gothic in some of the settings. Quite rare, particularly in the original boards.
