About this Item
[solid copy, light spotting/soiling to page edges, discoloration to endpapers/pastedowns, one-time owner's name and address on front pastedown; dust jacket (apparently a later issue, promoting the Warner Bros. film version of the book) chipped at spine ends and top of front panel, worn/soiled at all edges, 2-inch closed tear at top of front panel]. The novel of "every woman's great adventure"(!), this is kind of a "Grand Hotel" of Pregnancy, set in "the maternity ward of a great hospital, where ten women lie waiting" for said adventure, as we, the readers, are treated to their respective backstories and made privy to their innermost fears and anxieties. Axelson's play, "Life Begins," was first produced on the stage in 1932, and filmed under that title the same year; this novelized version appeared concurrently with the Warner Bros. remake, which toplined Geraldine Fitzgerald as the convicted murderess who is released from prison just long enough for her child to be born. (The Breen Office, of course, demanded the omission any scenes of the expectant moms experiencing labor pains, or scenes of actual (or even suggested) childbirth.)
