Karl Pearson (1857-1936), who founded the first university statistics department at University College London, made a major contribution to the methodology of science in The Grammar of Science (1892), established the discipline of mathematical statistics, and was Francis GaltonÕs (1822-1911) leading disciple, applying statistics to the study of heredity and evolution. The Chances of Death and Other Studies in Evolution is an important collection of his early essays. Two volumes, octavo. ix, [3], 388; [4], 460 pp. Photogravure frontispiece in each volume, plates, text illustrations. Publisher's gray-green cloth with gilt spine. Spine ends lightly chipped, spines faded. Bookplates of American zoologist Charles Atwood Kofold (1865-1947) and of another owner from the 1950s in each volume. A good, tight copy. First edition.
