About this Item
1882. [The Census of Ireland, 1881 - Area, Houses, and Population: Also the Ages, Civil or Conjugal Condition, Occupations, Birthplaces, Religion, and Education of the People. Province of Munster. County and City of Cork.] Taken on the night of the 3rd April 1881, the report presents the population and land as it stood at that point. The land, its size and valuation, and the amount of people living on it, is broken down by barony, town and townland, and by Poor Law unions. The baronies for Cork are Barretts. Barrymore, Condons & Clangibon, Cork, Duhallow, Fermoy, Imokilly, Kerrycurrihy, Kinalea, Kinnatalloon, Kinsale, Muskerry East, Bantry, Bear, Carberry East, Carbery West, Courceys, Ibane & Barryroe, Kinalmeaky and Muskerry West. The level of detail in the 1881 census surpasses that of all before it, and is only comparable with the 1871 census in terms of anything previous. We are shown figures for hospitals, gaols and workhouses, ages of husbands and wives in relation to each other, people's occupations, army and police figures, numbers of foreigners, numbers of disabled, religious affiliations, education standards reached, literacy levels, levels of Irish and English, and figures for emigration. All of these categories are broken down in detail, and compared with figures from previous censuses. As well as the figures for the county, there are parallel figures and tables for the city, which provide us with a remarkable insight into urban life in late nineteenth century Ireland. Disbound, housed in protective file. First edition copy. . . . Seller Inventory # BP0128041
