Stated second edition, but most likely the First Edition in book form of this classic gothic horror novel, the story was originally serialised in an incomplete version in the Newspaper "The True Briton" in 1793, the Novel first appeared in book form in 1794 published in London by J. Bell. No First Edition of this Gothic Novel is known to exist unless the publishers considered the incomplete serialization in "The True Briton" to be the First. All known copies published by Bell have "second edition" on the title page, so I believe that this is actually the First Edition in book form, bound in a recent quality full leather binding with embossed patterned decoration to board edges, internally illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, preface dated February 12th 1794, binding is in excellent condition, internally noticeable heavy foxing to opening few pages, mild browning to page edges, a few leaves slightly shorter than others with a few untrimmed and roughly opened page edges, nothing serious, text unaffected. A generally very good example of what is most likely the first edition in book form. Seller Inventory # 002326
