About this Item
Printed wrappers, small 4to, 2 plates. 264 pp. 384 items (plus 1 in addenda) Issued from Michelmore's 5 Royal Opera Arcade address. Highlights noted on the cover were: "Original Charters of the City of London - Henry VIII's Royal Sign Manual to the Ratification of the Treaty of London - Original Correspondences of the Seventeenth Century - The Goodricke Papers - The Founders of the B.F.B.S, - Thackeray Correspondence - Scott on his Portrait by Raeburn - Washington's Resolution to defend Massachusetts ; To Which is Added the Cabinet D'un Curieux: Illuminated Manuscripts of the Fifteenth Century : The Chartier Book of Hours - The Ingoldsthorp Psalter - The Carnaby (of Northumberland) Prayer Book (printed on vellum) - Louis XVI's copies of the Chansons de Piis, Le Balai, La Pucelle - Lord Stuart de Rothesay's Books - The First French Pocket Psalter - The First Romansch Bible; Grolier Club's English Writers "Wither to Prior". From the introduction: "The Cabinet d'un Curieux includes the beautiful Manuscript Book of Hours of the Fifteenth Century, which was written and illuminated for the famous Chartier Family at the time when France's most charming poet - Alain Chartier - was alive, and to whom it probably belonged. The English Illuminated MS. Ingoldsthorp Psalter is of very great Norfolk interest, for it was written and illuminated at Rainham Abbey about the year 1410. Between Sandringham and Lynn is the village of Ingoldsthorp. The Ingoldsthorps had Royal connections and early in the seventeenth Century this Psalter was bound for a member of the Royal Family. Lady Carnaby's Prayer Book of Salisbury 'Use' is of considerable Northumberland and Yorkshire interest and was printed on vellum and bound in velvet and silver in Henry VIII's reign." The catalogue is full of interesting material, one example being that noticed by James Westfall Thomson in his "History of Historical Writing", discussing John Mitchell Kemble (188 to 1857): "Then followed a quixotic episode in which Kemble, together with Trench, the future archbishop of Dublin, took part in an expedition to Spain to foment rebellion against Ferdinand VII. [Note:] » Kemble s diary of the expedition, covering 147 pages, and partly in the autograph of R C. Trench, has never been published It forms the bulk of vol 14 in the Kemble Collection offered for sale by G [Michelmore and Company, London (pp 160-64 of their Catalogue no. 24.)." Wrappers a little torn on the spine and slightly soiled, contents Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-45424
